General discussionU.S. Reconstruction/Occupation of Haiti

Ron Paul speaking on the floor of the House of Representatives on House Resolution 1021:
"[T]his resolution does not simply express our condolences, but rather it commits the US government 'to begin the reconstruction of Haiti' and affirms that 'the recovery and long-term needs of Haiti will require a sustained commitment by the United States. . . .' I do not believe that a resolution expressing our deep regret and sorrow over this tragedy should be used to commit the United States to a 'long-term' occupation of Haiti during which time the US government will provide for the reconstruction of that country. "

It's interesting to see that Congress would consider long-term reconstruction commitment to Haiti during a recession, and when the number of American dollars has been rising so sharply without proportional increase in GDP. They think government spending can just go on as usual. They think it is reasonable that US taxpayer dollars should be rerouted to a poor foreign nation for charity. What happened to individuals contributing out of their own volition?

Paul goes on to say, "I see a return to the failed attempts by the Clinton and Bush Administrations to establish Haiti as an American protectorate." What! I didn't hear about that. I wonder what he means.
